Attending Your First SMART Recovery Meeting
Overview
SMART Recovery meetings are free, supportive group gatherings where people work on changing addictive behaviors through discussion, self-empowerment, and practical tools.
SMART is designed to be accessible, adaptable, and affirming. Meetings are available both online and in person, participation is flexible, and individuals are respected regardless of where they are in their journey.
Meetings are open to anyone seeking help with alcohol, drug use, or other addictive behaviors inducing, but not limited to, gambling, gaming, and internet use.

What Happens at a Meeting
Most SMART Recovery meetings last about 60–90 minutes and are facilitated by trained volunteers.
Meetings focus on practical tools and supportive discussion. A typical meeting may include:

Check-in: Participants briefly share how they are doing.

Discussion: The group explores recovery challenges and strategies.

Tool work: SMART Recovery tools are introduced and applied to real-life situations.

Mutual support: Participants share ideas and encouragement in a respectful space.
Meetings are participant-driven and emphasize skill-building and personal choice.

You are not required to speak. Many people choose to listen during their first meeting. Participation is always voluntary.
SMART recognizes that people have different goals which might include abstinence, moderation, or other behavior changes, and meetings are designed to adapt to individual needs.

SMART Recovery meetings are:

Before Your First Meeting
To help you feel comfortable:

Arrive or log in a few minutes early.

Review the meeting description for any specific guidelines.

Remember that you can participate at your comfort level.
There is no requirement to label yourself, share your story, or commit to a specific goal before you are ready.
After Your First Meeting
It can be helpful to attend several meetings to become familiar with the tools and find a group that feels like a good fit. You may try different formats or times until you find what works best for you.
