SMART Volunteer Code of Conduct

The SMART Recovery Volunteer Code of Conduct outlines the values, principles, and behavioral expectations for all SMART Recovery volunteers. It is grounded in SMART Recovery’s core values of Empowerment, Equity, Inclusion, Integrity, and Accountability and applies to anyone serving in a volunteer role.

All volunteers are expected to review and follow this Code of Conduct, regardless of what type of meeting they facilitate.

What This Document Covers

The Code of Conduct provides guidance on:

  • Supporting participant self-determination and independence

  • Acting with integrity and professionalism

  • Creating inclusive, respectful, and non-judgmental spaces

  • Protecting confidentiality

  • Avoiding conflicts of interest, harassment, and exploitation

  • Accurately representing SMART Recovery

  • Proactively addressing facilitation or ethical concerns

It also clarifies that volunteers do not provide medical, legal, or professional advice and should maintain appropriate boundaries at all times.

Who This Applies To

This Code of Conduct applies to:

  • Meeting facilitators (in-person and online)

  • Family & Friends facilitators

  • Trainers and training volunteers

  • Any individual volunteering on behalf of SMART Recovery
